Do the autumn fantasy do well in a clay soil? The article states rapid growth. Is that in the 2-3 foot range, per year, once established? Does the autumn fantasy have those helicopter seeds in the spring? Overall, how well do they hold up to the ice storms we see every now in then in mid Illinois? How close to a house can you plant this tree? Thanks

The Autumn Fantasy Maple is a freemanii maple, which is one of the most durable varieties of maple trees. They typically tolerate clay soils well, and do have a rapid growth rating. It is really hard to give an exact amount of growth per year because it depends on a lot of factors. Any tree will take 2 or 3 years after planting to get fully established- but as far as trees go this would be one of the faster growing maple varieties. They hold up to ice storms very well, and have very good branching structure. Autumn Fantasy as well as Autumn Blaze are considered seedless, and will not produce helicopter seeds except on very very rare occasions- and even then sporadically. This tree will spread about 35-40 feet wide at full maturity (many years down the road)- ideally I would plant it 20 feet from the house; however, 15 is pretty common and we have had customers go even a little closer with no problems really. Personally, my minimum distance from house would be around 15 ft.
