What are the best uses for Birch Trees?
Beautiful birch trees are versatile in where they can be planted and are very adaptable to a variety of site conditions. Check out what birch trees we have available and their different uses →

If you're reading this post you're likely considering a birch tree for your yard but you're not quite sure which one is the right option for you. They are the preferable choice for adding ornamental interest and shade to your landscape.

Before selecting your tree, we recommend that you ask yourself, "What do I need to achieve in this space?" This is an ideal place to start. From there, decide on what features stand out to you, be sure to consider the tree's mature size and shape. For example, Whitespire Birch will be much smaller at maturity than a Heritage® River Birch.

There will be no shortage of the beauty and wonder that these trees will supply!

Best Uses Collage

  • Birch trees double as privacy screens even in winter months, acting as a visual block
  • Consider them for their ornamental characteristics— their beautiful native look, striking golden fall color and unique bark, whether it be chalky white, or their rugged exfoliating bark
  • Place them around property lines
  • Useful as a privacy screen in backyard landscapes
  • Consider using them for adding dimension and color in your berm, as an accent or anchor in landscape beds
  • Place them in locations that tend to hold more water than others, especially after heavy rains

Heritage River Birch

If you need a fast-growing ornamental shade tree, this is it! Heritage® River Birch shows off in the spring and summer with large, glossy light green leaves that will turn a golden-yellow in the fall. Our favorite part of this tree is hands-down its interesting peeling bark. As it's bark peels away it exposes patches of cream, orange and pinkish-tan colors that become more mottled and interesting with age. This Midwest native is sturdy and fast-growing. Heritage® River Birch takes on a pyramidal form at maturity, reaching about 40 Ft Tall and 20 Ft Wide.

Whitespire

Homeowners love planting this tree around their house— in berms, landscape beds, and as an accent or anchor near a driveway, deck or patio. Whitespire Birch is a medium-sized tree, maturing to about 30 Ft Tall and 25 Ft Wide with an upright oval to a pyramidal shape. This tree is resistant to the Birch Borer and Japanese Beetle and is very adaptable. Whitespire Birch's leaves will rustle in the wind, turning a bright yellow in the fall. This tree is extremely low maintenance once established. We've even delivered these trees to a Chicago rooftop and planted them in containers! Check out the picture here.

River Birch is the king of ornamental shade trees! It's commonly used for screening and shade and has proven over and over why it's a customer favorite. It will grow to be a large shade tree reaching approximately 40 Ft Tall and 35 Ft Wide, maturing with arching to upright spreading shape. This tree is an excellent addition to any home. This versatile, fast-growing tree is valued not only for its stunning black, brown, and tan peeling bark but also for its outstanding gold fall color.

Dakota Pinnacle

Dakota Pinnacle Birch is the perfect selection if you're looking for an attractive, reasonably sized, narrow tree. This tree will have more of a columnar look compared to the other varieties we offer, maturing to only 15 Ft Wide and about 35 Ft Tall. Its slender form will allow for placement in tight spaces such as in berms, near property lines, or smaller landscapes in general. Dakota Pinnacle Birch leafs out early and has rich fall color. Very cold hardy making it a great option for Northern Illinois landscapes. Fairly resistant to the Japanese Beetle. Dakota Pinnacle Birch is very adaptable, tolerant of urban pollution and will thrive in inner-city environments.

Please note that Dakota Pinnacle Birch will not be available until Spring 2021.
