Quick Overview

Dawn Redwood is an ancient and interesting tree with a very delicate, fern-like appearance, and a very tall, pyramidal shape. The shaggy, reddish bark is appealing and its rusty orange fall color makes this a spectacular eye-catching tree. Dawn Redwood has the appearance of an evergreen tree, but it will actually lose its needle-like leaves in the fall after they turn a brilliant copper color.

Why it rocks:

Dawn Redwood is an ancient and interesting tree with a very delicate, fern-like appearance, and a very tall, pyramidal shape. The shaggy, reddish bark is appealing and its rusty orange fall color makes this a spectacular eye-catching tree. Dawn Redwood is the hardiest of the redwood/sequoia family and is extremely fast-growing. Dawn Redwood has the appearance of an evergreen tree, but it will actually lose its needle-like leaves in the fall after they turn a brilliant copper color.

Where to put it:

Dawn Redwood is often planted in the same locations as an evergreen tree would normally be planted, along property lines, at the corner of a property, as a focal point in a yard. They are great for adding privacy and screening to your yard. Our Dawn Redwood are trimmed up to around 4-5 ft from the ground, these would also be great in parkway's (area between the street and sidewalks) to add shade to streets and homes. Because of Dawn Redwood's size, we recommend planting at least 15 ft away from buildings. Dawn Redwood does not mind being planted in wet locations and can actually help remove water from wet parts of a yard.

What it needs:

Dawn Redwood is tolerant of most conditions and is a good substitute for evergreens in wet locations.

Gorgeous tree with year round interest.

I have an office building with a very wet area at the back of the property and found this tree about 2 1/2 inches in the back of a nursery lot. Once planted it took a couple of years for its branches to drop after being crammed into a small space for what looked like many years, but now it is growing several feet per year.
