Why it rocks:

Butternut otherwise commonly known as White Walnut is a North American native and relative of Black Walnut. Butternut is one of the hardiest nut trees and is slower growing than its well-known cousin. Butternut has a light weight, beige in color wood. Its kernel within the fruit gives this tree its name of Butternut, as it is sweet and very oily which can be harvested in late October for baking, confections and fresh eating. Dark green foliage will give way to a mottled chartreuse to yellow appearance.

Where to put it:

Butternut is an excellent choice for shade or general landscape.

What it needs:

Butternut prefers deep, moist, rich, well-drained soils under sunny conditions, however, will perform reasonably well in dry, rocky soils with higher pH levels as well. If selecting this tree for its fruit, considering pollination purposes it is recommended that two or more be planted.
