We are honoring the Red, White & Blue this week with the tried and true, American Hornbeam!
American Hornbeam is a widely adaptable small ornamental shade tree. Outstanding red-orange fall color sets this tree apart! You may actually know this tree by a different name, Blue Beech, Ironwood, or Musclewood— all inspired by its unique trunk and bark!
American Hornbeam is often used as an accent in the landscape due to its smaller size. However, it can definitely still be used as a small shade tree! It can be used anywhere from open spaces to parkways.
Reasons we adore this American beauty →
- Chicagoland native
- Unique foliage (leaves) that emerge with hints of reddish-violet before changing to a dark green and then turns a vibrant red-orange color in the fall
- Small Tree (15-25 feet)
- Extremely versatile in the landscape
- Attracts wildlife
