Vernal Witchhazel

Why it rocks:

Vernal Witchhazel is a durable plant which is native in the Midwest. The large medium green leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow in late fall. This plant also features long lasting fragrant, yellow to red flowers which have an interesting shape and appear between January and March providing some color to the otherwise bleak landscape. Vernal Witchhazel is a great looking, durable, native tree that is a great addition to any yard. 

Where to put it:

Vernal Witchhazel is a multistemmed, dense, rounded shrub with a neat and variable appearance. It is used quite effectively in groupings around building on the University of Illinois campus. This plant is also quite frequently seen in planter boxes and would make a great screen or unpruned hedge. The unusually early flower date, dense habit, and excellent fall color, which holds into the winter, make this tree a winner for any landscape. 

What it needs:

Vernal Witchhazel is a very tough and adaptable shrub, which has shown to grow equally well in well drained top soil and moist and poorly drained clay. This shrub will do well in full sun of partial shade, this shrub can surely handle almost any situation.
